Hydrafacial vs. Regular Facial: What’s the Difference?
If you’re looking for a facial in Victoria, you may be wondering whether to book a Hydrafacial or choose a more traditional facial treatment. While both can leave your skin looking refreshed and rejuvenated, the way they treat the skin—and the experience they provide—can be quite different.
At Olakino Laser + Skin in Victoria, BC, we offer both technology-based Hydrafacial treatments and results-driven Signature Facials. The best choice depends on your skin concerns, treatment goals and the type of facial experience you’re looking for.
Here’s how Hydrafacial and traditional facials compare.
What Is a Hydrafacial?
A Hydrafacial is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses specialized technology to cleanse, exfoliate, extract impurities and deeply hydrate the skin within a single treatment.
At Olakino, our Hydrafacial treatments in Victoria use the Hydrafacial Syndeo™ system and patented Vortex-Fusion™ technology. Specialized tips and gentle suction help remove debris from the skin while hydrating serums are delivered to the freshly cleansed surface.
Unlike manual extractions that may be included in a traditional facial, Hydrafacial uses controlled suction to help clear congested pores. Treatments can also be customized with targeted boosters and LED light therapy depending on your skin concerns.
What Is a Traditional Facial?
Traditional facials typically rely more heavily on professional skincare products and hands-on techniques to cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin.
At Olakino, our Signature Facials in Victoria are results-driven treatments performed by our Medical Aestheticians and customized according to your skin.
Our facial options include treatments such as the Aloha Fire + Ice Facial, which combines warming and cooling professional treatments to resurface and refresh the skin, and the Mahalo Glow Peel, designed to exfoliate and improve concerns such as dullness, uneven texture and dehydration.
Traditional facials can be an excellent choice for clients who enjoy the experience of a hands-on facial while still wanting professional skincare and visible skin rejuvenation.

Hydrafacial vs. Traditional Facial: What Are the Main Differences?
Although both treatments are designed to improve the appearance and health of your skin, the biggest difference is how the treatment is performed.
A Hydrafacial is technology-driven. The Hydrafacial device performs several steps of the treatment using specialized tips and controlled suction to cleanse, exfoliate, extract and hydrate.
A traditional facial relies more heavily on professional skincare products and hands-on techniques selected by your Medical Aesthetician.
Neither approach is necessarily better for everyone. The right choice depends on what you want to achieve.
Exfoliation
Both Hydrafacial and traditional facials can exfoliate the skin, but they accomplish this differently.
Hydrafacial combines physical exfoliation from its specialized treatment tip with professional solutions delivered through the device.
Traditional facials may use professional exfoliating products, masks, peels or other techniques selected according to your skin type and concerns.
Extractions
This is one of the biggest differences between the two treatments.
Hydrafacial uses its Vortex-Fusion technology and controlled suction to help remove oil and debris from congested pores. Many clients particularly enjoy this aspect of Hydrafacial because it allows for thorough cleansing without relying solely on traditional manual extraction techniques.
For someone concerned about congestion, blackheads or oily skin, this can be one of the reasons to consider Hydrafacial.
Hydration
Hydration is a major component of a Hydrafacial.
As the treatment progresses, the Hydrafacial system delivers hydrating solutions and serums to the skin. Our Deluxe and Platinum treatments can also incorporate customized boosters selected according to your individual skin concerns.
Traditional facials can also provide significant hydration through professional serums, masks and moisturizers, but without the Hydrafacial Vortex-Fusion delivery system.
Customization
Customization comes with Hydrafacial, where there is less customization with our Signature Facials
With Hydrafacial, customization can include targeted booster serums, LED light therapy and different treatment protocols. At Olakino, our Deluxe and Platinum HydraFacials allow us to build the treatment around concerns such as congestion, dehydration, dullness and visible signs of aging.
Is Hydrafacial better for congested or oily skin?
Hydrafacial can be an excellent option for clients experiencing oily or congested skin because the treatment combines exfoliation with gentle suction to help remove debris from the pores.
It also doesn’t simply focus on removing oil. Hydration remains an important part of the treatment, helping leave the skin feeling cleansed without sacrificing moisture.
If congestion, enlarged-looking pores or recurring buildup are among your primary concerns, a Hydrafacial may be worth discussing with your Medical Aesthetician.

Which Facial Is Better for Dry or Dull Skin?
Both treatments can be beneficial for dry or dull-looking skin.
Hydrafacial is particularly focused on combining exfoliation with intensive hydration. Removing surface buildup can immediately help skin appear smoother and brighter, while hydrating serums leave it feeling replenished.
A traditional facial may be preferable when you’re looking for a more hands-on treatment experience using professional skincare products, masks and customized exfoliation.
Your skin can also change throughout the year. A treatment that works particularly well during a dry Victoria winter may be different from what your skin needs during the warmer months.
Although we believe there isn’t automatically one right facial for everyone, we prefer Hydrafacial for dry or dull skin.
Hydrafacial vs. Facial Before an Event
Have a wedding, vacation, photoshoot or special occasion coming up?
Both treatments can be used as part of your pre-event skincare routine, but Hydrafacial is especially popular when clients want a refreshed, hydrated appearance without significant downtime.
Hydrafacial treatments are non-invasive, allowing most clients to return to their normal routine immediately afterward.
If you have an important event approaching, however, we recommend discussing timing with your Medical Aesthetician rather than trying a new skin treatment immediately before the event. This gives us the opportunity to recommend the treatment and timing best suited to your skin.
Deluxe vs. Platinum Hydrafacial
At Olakino Laser + Skin, we currently offer two primary Hydrafacial options.
Deluxe Hydrafacial
Our approximately 45-minute Deluxe HydraFacial includes the core Hydrafacial treatment along with a personalized booster selected for your skin concerns and professional red or blue LED light therapy.
The Deluxe is an excellent choice when you want to move beyond a basic facial and address specific skin concerns while receiving the cleansing, extraction and hydration benefits of Hydrafacial.
Platinum Hydrafacial
Our approximately 60-minute Platinum Hydrafacial includes the components of the Deluxe treatment with the addition of lymphatic drainage at the beginning of the treatment.
It is our most comprehensive Hydrafacial experience and is designed for clients wanting the full Hydrafacial treatment protocol in one appointment.
You can view our current Hydrafacial options and pricing in Victoria on our main treatment page.
*Also during a skin treatment consultation, we may offer a more customized approach, combining our Laser facial with Hydrafacial.
So, Should You Choose a Hydrafacial or Traditional Facial?
Think about what you want from your appointment.
If your priorities include deep cleansing, gentle pore extraction, hydration and technology-driven customization, Hydrafacial may be the better fit for your goals.
If you prefer hands-on skincare, professional masks and products, and a more traditional facial experience, one of our Signature Facials may be a better match.
And you don’t necessarily have to choose one forever. Skin needs change throughout the year, and different professional treatments can play different roles within a well-rounded skincare routine.
Find the Right Facial in Victoria for Your Skin
