SkinPen should not be used on individuals who have active skin cancer in the treatment area, open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area, allergies to stainless steel or anesthetics, hemorrhagic or hemostatic disorders, are pregnant or nursing, or are currently taking drugs containing isotretinoin (such as Accutane).
Yes, microneedling is highly safe when performed in a controlled, clinical environment. Olakino Laser + Skin is a fully Island Health approved skin clinic in Victoria, BC. This means our facility, sterilization protocols, and treatment workflows strictly adhere to the highest public health and safety regulations mandated in British Columbia.
- Discontinue the use of topical retinoids (Retinol, Retin A) Vitamin A creams and other topical medications for about 1 week before your microneedling appointment.
- Wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day prior to your treatment.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure or sunburns.
- Postpone your treatment if you have active breakouts or open lesions in the treatment areas.

While high-quality skincare is essential, serums often struggle to penetrate the skin’s thick outer barrier. Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels that allow your skin to absorb professional-grade nutrients up to 80% more effectively. It’s a minimally invasive procedure with little downtime, especially compared to other procedures. Recovery time is individual and will depend on your unique skin. Most patients will experience a light pinkness or redness in the targeted areas, similar to a mild or moderate sunburn for 1-3 days following the procedure. Approximately 2-3 days post-treatment, you may experience dry or flaking skin in the targeted area, which should resolve quickly. You will start to see an improvement in your skin’s appearance after about a week following treatment.
• For the first 24 hours use the Lift HG. These are provided to you in your microneedling kit.
• For the first 24-48 hours, be sure to use freshly cleaned towels, sheets, pillow cases, and clothes. Wash hands before touching face and avoid wearing makeup.
• For the first 72 hours, avoid any sweaty exercise, hot tubs/sauna, pools, sun exposure.
• Increased bruising can take place if you are taking blood thinning medication.
• No other aesthetic treatments in between consecutive Microneedling sessions.
• You might experience dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching or peeling. Those conditions resolved over time without any further complications.

We cannot perform microneedling over active, inflamed acne to avoid spreading bacteria. However, it is the gold standard for treating acne scarring once the breakouts have cleared.
